100 LEED Certified Projects and Growing

Weston, FL  – Nearly a dozen years ago, The Spinnaker Group started out on a journey of sustainability that has not only helped positively change the landscape of South Florida, but that has made healthy impacts of global proportions. Rob Hink, founder of The Spinnaker Group and co-founder of the United States Green Building Council South Florida Chapter, saw a need for change in the way buildings were built and operated. Filling a void in the marketplace, The Spinnaker Group helped build some of the first LEED buildings in South Florida –- and on November 30th TSG certified its 100th LEED project. Ranging in size and type, TSG’s extensive portfolio of LEED projects can be found locally in the U.S. as well as across the globe in far reach places such as Kuwait and Colombia. As of August 2015, more than 13.8 billion square feet of building space is LEED certified and it was estimated that for 2015, 40-48% of new nonresidential construction will be green, equating to a $120-145 billion opportunity (http://www.usgbc.org/articles/green-building-facts). The Spinnaker Group is proud to be a part of this global impact of change and with sea water levels on the rise; it is of extra importance for areas like South Florida. One of the more recent LEED certified projects in TSG’s portfolio is the Miami Design District which is comprised of an entire neighborhood of sustainable development, earning the City’s first LEED for Neighborhood for Development certification, which achieved LEED Gold. Projects like the Fort Lauderdale Airport Car Rental Facility, Staples retail in Miami, and the Palm Beach Zoo Animal Hospital helped get The Spinnaker Group its start.  These early projects gave way to other exciting projects such as Broward County’s Young at Art Museum and County Library, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Cleveland Clinic, various projects at the local universities such as the Broward College International Public Safety Building and the newly opened Health Simulation Lab; FIU’s School of International Policy which is also home to one of the largest green roofs in South Florida; Lynn University and Nova Southeastern University and the University of Miami. Spinnaker’s role in government is also extensive and can be seen in an array of local municipal and civic projects such as the Village of Wellington Municipal Complex, City of Pompano Beach Fire Stations, City of Hallandale Beach’s BF James Park, Broward County’s Edgar Mills Community Center, City of Miami’s Moore Park and Day Care Center, the State of Florida District Court of Appeals, and many GSA Immigration and Customs buildings. But the work didn’t stop there. Spinnaker has also helped develop several LEED residential condos such as One Plantation Apartments and the recently completed New River Village phase III, also known as Vu New River. Several other high-end condo projects are in the works in the tri-county area. Other private sector work also makes up a large portion of TSG’s portfolio such as projects like Palm Court, Aventura Optima Plaza (Spinnaker’s first LEED Platinum project!), Broken Sound Fitness Center and Spa, Naples Botanical Garden, Cadillac Hotel and the newly opened 1 Hotel in South Beach. With these and the many other projects not mentioned here, it’s easy to see that The Spinnaker Group has been involved with just about every project type known in the construction industry and as LEED and other sustainable initiatives become more and more commonplace, TSG will most certainly be well on the way to certifying 100 more projects before long. The current workload of the Firm is indicative of that of a robust economy and booming construction industry; one that is finally seeing the importance of building sustainably and insuring the health and wellness for future generations.

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System, overseen by the U.S. Green Building Council in Washington, DC, is a voluntary, consensus-based national rating system for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings.  LEED addresses all building types and emphasizes state-of-the-art “green” strategies in five areas: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials and resources selection, and indoor environmental quality.  LEED Accredited Professionals (LEED APs) have demonstrated a thorough understanding of green building techniques and the LEED Green Building Rating System.

Respect! I think that http://sabbiabeachcondos.com/ also deserve a mention here, seeing as they have one of the buildings that tries to save more energy than it uses up. You don’t have that very often with condos, especially not in FL.
