Key Biscayne, FL (June 27, 2016) – The University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine + Atmospheric Science (UM RSMAS) is officially LEED Gold Certified! After years of planning, design and construction, UM’s new state-of-the-art research facility is now able to help the rest of the world better understand a myriad of atmospheric phenomena, including hurricanes. Hurricanes are the costliest natural disasters that strike the United States. A better understanding of how structures withstand — or fail to withstand — wind, wave and surge forces during a hurricane lead to improved construction standards and practices that enhance resiliency and protect human lives. The project is comprised of two distinct, but interconnected components: an 8,520 square foot state-of-the-art SUSTAIN (Surge-Structure-Atmosphere Interaction) research facility and a 47,942 square foot Marine Life Science Center, designed to support cutting edge research on living marine organisms. This is the only facility worldwide with a wind-wave-storm surge simulator capable of generating hurricane force winds in a three dimensional test environment. Along with many other LEED projects at the University of Miami, The Spinnaker Group completed the LEED Consulting, Energy Modeling and Building Commissioning for this project. Some of the notable sustainable features include meeting the Sustainable Sites Credit 8: Light Pollution Reduction, Optimized Energy Performance that includes an annual energy cost savings over the Baseline case of 43.35% and meeting also meeting the FSC Certified Wood Credit with over 87% utilized on the project.

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System, overseen by the U.S. Green Building Council in Washington, DC, is a voluntary, consensus-based national rating system for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings. LEED addresses all building types and emphasizes state-of-the-art “green” strategies in five areas: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials and resources selection, and indoor environmental quality. LEED Accredited Professionals (LEED APs) have demonstrated a thorough understanding of green building techniques and the LEED Green Building Rating System.
